Our role at Witherslack Group is to give the young people who live in our children’s homes a sense of enduring security that they may have struggled to find until now. That’s why job security is part of what’s on offer here for you, as a Residential Support Worker (Waking nights 4 on/ 4 off). We want you to have a long-term positive impact on the young people you work with. So, making sure you feel well taken care of and confident about your future here is vitally important to us. In that sense, it’s the perfect entry point or way to grow your career in care with one of the UK’s leading providers.
The young people here have had difficult starts in life, suffering adverse childhood experiences and a range of traumatic events – having either experienced or being at significant risk of experiencing child sexual exploitation. They sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, feeling ill, upset or just unable to sleep. To have someone like you there, who understands them and can make sure they’re alright, makes a massive difference. We meet the needs of up to 5 girls aged 7-17 who have complex social, emotional and mental health challenges. Our purpose and approach in the home is based upon “trauma-informed” care which is ensuring the physical and emotional safety of the girls is our first priority.
To enable us to provide the best outcomes for our young people, we need people committed to supporting them, long term. It is essential you have a good appreciation of the need for structure, boundaries and shared routines, how these support positive attachment and trauma recovery in children. Experience of working within the social care setting or dealing with challenging behaviour is desirable.
Our staff understand that challenging behaviour is a presentation of underlying issues. We work with the girls 1-1 to help them through the trauma of their past, so that they have a positive future and prepare them for the next chapter of their lives.
In short, we’re giving them some of their childhood back, with hope for the future.
The benefit of doing a role like this is it feels good. Every day brings a sense of hard-won achievement and progress. There are also some outstanding rewards – in fact, our package is one of the best in the sector:
