IT Systems Administrator
Would you like to play a key role in a growing team delivering systems to assist the Royal Navy with real time preventative ship maintenance? We currently have a vacancy for a IT Systems Administrator at our site in Portsmouth – Naval Base.
As a Systems Administrator, you will be working as part of the Systems Information Exploitation (SIE) team to deliver the systems sending real-time alerts to BAE Systems analysts and staff on board Royal Navy ships notifying them of immediate and potential maintenance issues that could lead to future problems. You will be leading the design, setup, administration and configuration of hardware devices, physical and virtual servers and will be responsible for creating a baseline platform for which the solution and third-party components can be deployed to. You will also be designing, setting up and configuring test environments, data repositories and development tool environments. In addition, you will be ensuring environments meet user, business and security requirements, best practices and criteria.

The SIE Project is in a period of growth with additional types of ships and customer in scope so this role will provide you with the opportunity to work in a growing sector of BAE that is expanding the team to meet new demand, this role could therefore lead to future opportunities for leadership or senior positions within the team. This role could also lead to opportunities within the wider BAE Systems business.
Your main responsibilities as an IT Systems Administrator will involve:
Physical and Virtual Design
Designing environments to meet specific user, business, performance, security and reliability requirements.
Estimating capacity and performance requirements for future needs.Setup, Configuration and Administration
Stands up appropriate environments as needed to support platform deployments, support services and development.
Ensuring environments are updated with security and bug fix updates on a regular basis with appropriate regression testing.
Enforcing best practice security functions on environments.
Proactively monitoring and adjusting data repositories and development environments for potential issues.
Ensuring environments are built in a controlled, repeatable and auditable manner.
Anticipating future needs of various stakeholders to ensure that solutions are future-proofed as is practicable.Stakeholder Interface
Engaging data repository users to understand data volumes, frequency and sensitivity.
Engage with suppliers / third-parties to understand environment needs and how to connect systems together.
Your skills and qualifications:
Experience of Physical and Virtual Design
Good knowledge of various hardware components, operating systems and networking:
Linux Administration (ideally Red Hat/CentOS).
Virtual Machine provisioning and management.
Container technology (e.g. Docker).
Hardware setup and configuration.
Shell scripting, git.Experience of how to solve problems and quickly resolve root causes of issues and identify opportunities for improvement.
Experience of working within Engineering and Operations environments.
Experience of working in a Software Development Environment.
Degree in Software Engineering, strongly related subject or equivalent working experience
Relevant administration certification (e.g. Network+, Linux+, RHCSA, LFCS) or equivalent experience
